Microsoft Security Essentials v2 beta now available to public

Share |

Microsoft today released a beta version of its free antivirus software, Microsoft Security Essentials, to the public. If you are interested, you can download the beta on the Microsoft Connect page for Microsoft Security Essentials. Of course, as noted, you must be running a legal copy (as they say, genuine) of Windows. As you can see, it has a, somewhat, new look.

Microsoft Security Essentials version 2.0.375.0

What's new?

In this beta, there are new features and improvements, which are:

Windows Firewall integration - Upon setup, the installer will ask if you would like to turn Windows Firewall on or off.

Enhanced protection against web based threats - Microsoft Security Essentials integrates with Internet Explorer to provide protection against web based threats.

New protection engine - The antimalware engine has been updated, which offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities with improved performance.

Network protection - Microsoft Security Essentials will now protect you against network based exploits.

This beta version works with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, however, Windows XP will not have the network protection feature. This is because Microsoft Security Essentials requires WFP (Windows Filtering Platform), which allows applications to hook into packet processing, which, as stated, was introduced in Windows NT 6.0 (Windows Vista).

So are you interested? After all, it is completely free. If interested, you can download it here.
